MAZE Hairbrush: Revolutionizing Hairbrush Maintenance

A Convenient Solution for Tangled Hair

For years, cleaning hairbrushes has been a tedious task that many have simply accepted as a necessary evil. However, designers Scott Shim and Morris Koo have taken on the challenge and created the innovative MAZE hairbrush, a revolutionary solution that makes hairbrush maintenance a breeze.

The MAZE hairbrush is specifically designed to easily remove trapped and tangled strands of hair, addressing the fundamental problem of hairbrush maintenance. The brush head is constructed in two parts, intricately intermingled in a maze pattern: the void and the structural frames. The void is located between the structural frames, which are fixed at the handle area but free at the other end. This unique configuration allows users to bend the brush head with a simple pull or push of a fingertip, providing unparalleled flexibility.

When the frames are pulled back, they flare out in multiple layers, creating accessible gaps between the bristles. This allows users to easily clean trapped hair and debris. Reversing the pull forward gradually elevates the frames, loosening the trapped hair for hassle-free removal. The structural constraints then retract the arched frames back to their original orientation when the applied force is released. This operation can be repeated as many times as desired, ensuring thorough cleaning.

The MAZE hairbrush is made using injection molded ABS plastic with bristle inserts, resulting in a durable and long-lasting product. With dimensions of 8.5 inches (h) x 2.5 inches (w) x 0.5 inches (d), it is compact and easy to handle.

What sets the MAZE hairbrush apart is its focus on user engagement and sustainability. Traditional hairbrushes often end up in the trash due to lack of maintenance, contributing to unnecessary waste. By involving users in the cleaning process, the MAZE hairbrush promotes a more sustainable lifestyle. Its inclusive structure eliminates the need for additional parts or tools, making it a cost-effective and environmentally friendly choice.

The MAZE hairbrush project was undertaken from June 2012 to December 2013 at the Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. The designers conducted extensive research on the hairbrush market, discovering that the expected demand for shaving brushes and hairbrushes was around 700 million dollars annually. This staggering number highlights the potential waste volume generated by this market, with most hairbrushes being disposed of due to lack of maintenance rather than deterioration.

Overcoming creative, technical, and research challenges, Scott Shim and Morris Koo successfully developed a participatory and sustainable solution for hairbrush maintenance. The MAZE hairbrush not only simplifies the cleaning process but also encourages users to actively engage in prolonging the lifespan of their hairbrushes.

The MAZE hairbrush has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Beauty, Personal Care, and Cosmetic Products Design category in 2015. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The MAZE hairbrush stands out for its integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings while contributing to a better world.
